Have you ever thought about your future? Where are you going to be in 5 years? It's a question that usually pops up on a job interview, and most just try to give the answer the interviewer wants to here "I see myself working for a strong company like this one with opportunity to grow/advance". But seriously, where do you see yourself in 5 years? Hopefully you have an idea, but I have a scary feeling that you haven't thought about it much. In my last blog, I wrote about 'Goal Setting' focusing on monthly and weekly goals with the ability, with practice, to set goals further out in the future. I hope you all have started on your monthly goal setting and actually meeting some weekly goals - it is a very gratifying experience. Starting today, I want you to start thinking about the future by thinking of where you want to be in 5 years. Take some time to think it through and write down some of your ideas. Again, you are going to start this with the end in mind. Here's the outline for your 5 year goal assignment:
1. Write down a few ideas on your 5 year goal and put them in order of the most favorable on top.
2. Think of where you were 5 years ago, so during the year 2004... what were you doing? where did you live? how much money were you making? and so on... make a list that gives you a good detail of your status 5 years ago, but don't make it too lengthy.
3. Think of where you are now (2009) and write down a list detailing your current status... what are you doing? where are you living? how much money are you making? and so on...
Now you have 15 years of you life written down. Very interesting... what have you accomplished from 2004 to 2009? What is your satisfaction rating for what you have done? Do you think you could have done more? Did you accomplish more than what you thought you could have?
Based on your rating, and looking 5 years ahead at your goals, you have an idea of what you need to do to achieve your goals. You're either on your way to making your 5 year goal, or you may have some self improvements to work on in your life (get started on your monthly goal setting and practice).
Embrace your past. You may have heard the phrase "there are no mistakes, just learning experiences", and if you haven't, start living by it. Don't regret what you did, or didn't do because you're wasting time by doing so. Move forward by rewarding your past - YES! REWARD YOUR PAST! What the heck does that mean? Well, you made it this far, so be happy about that. Now you have the rest of your life (let's look at 5 years in the future for now) to have a more enjoyable life - increasing spiritually, emotionally, physically, and financially.
That's it for now... Continue on your journey my friends....
